Usage

The pluperfect is used to speak about what someone had done:

Je me suis rendu conte que j'avais oublié mon cles
I realised that I had forgotten my keys
.

Mon ami m'a dit que j'avais gagné la loterie
My friend told me that I had won the lottery

Je ne savais pas que ma femme avait déjà réglé le compte
I  didn't know that my wife had already paid the bill

 

Formation

The pluperfect is formed in the same way as the perfect tense, except that the imperfect of the auxiliary verb is used instead of the present. Here are the forms of the pluperfect of Parler and Aller

J'étais allé I had gone J 'avais parlé I had spoken
Tu étais allé You had gone Tu avais parlé You had spoken
Il était allé He had gone Il avait parlé He had spoken
Nous étions allés We had gone Nous avions parlé We had spoken
Vous étiez allé You had gone Vous aviez parlé You had spoken
Ils étaient allés They had gone Ils avaient parlé They had spoken
